Explosion at Coal Mine, 16 Killed

A total of 16 miners were killed and 10 others are missing due to an explosion in a coal mine in the city of Lugansk, Ukraine.

The explosion occurred on Friday morning at 01:57 local time. For a while, the fate of 10 missing miners is unknown. Similarly, as reported by AFP on Friday (29/07/2011).

Earlier, the Ukrainian government said three miners were injured and had rushed to the hospital, while nine others are still trapped and their fate is unknown.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Yury Boiko come to the mine site owned Ukhodolskaya-Vostochnaya which is a subsidiary of Krasnodonugol Mining Company.

Ukraine's coal mines contain large amounts of methane gas. In 2007, as many as 70 people were killed and the tragedy of the worst mine accidents in the country
