Earthquake hits New Zealand

An earthquake measuring 5.5 Richter scale (SR) rocked the city of Christchurch today. The quake forced the residents ran out of houses, buildings and other buildings.

The quake also caused large stones falling from the hill. There are no reports of casualties or damage in this earthquake. Local media reported people running in the streets when the quake occurred, while workers at the mall or the supermarket were evacuated immediately after the quake shook.
SR 5.5 magnitude earthquake was centered approximately 10 kilometers southeast of Christchurch. While the central depth of the quake was reported to reach 11 kilometers. So reported Reuters on Monday (6/13/2011).

Earthquake shocks that hit today, caused the City of Port Hills are filled with large stones that landslides from the hills. While some areas east of the city is flooded by water.

Christchurch is often shaken by earthquakes. The most severe disaster occurred four months ago when the 6.1 magnitude earthquake caused 181 people dead and prompted a massive evacuation of residents. September last year the city was also hit by a strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake.
