Israel and the Lebanese army firefight near the border region in rural and northern Israel, Monday (01/08/2011) morning. No injuries from the incident, reminiscent of the affairs of the border with Israel still continues to cause tension.
Both sides accused each other party triggering the firefight. Israeli soldiers shot them ahead from across the border when they're installing a fence boundary states in the region.
"This morning, a unity IDF (Israel Defense Forces) who were patrolling the area regularly in Israel close to the Israel-Lebanon border were shot from the direction (regions) of Lebanon. Unity is then returned fire toward the source of the shot and reported the incident to the UNIFIL," IDF spokesman said.
Instead, the Lebanese claim they shot Israeli soldiers caught crossing the Blue Line, the border between the two countries which established the United Nations in 2000. Neither Israel nor Lebanon disagree with each other regarding the accuracy of this boundary line at some point.
"Israeli patrols in the area of Wazzani crossed the Blue Line and get up to 30 meters. Lebanese soldiers stationed in the area then fired warning shots. The Israeli soldiers then retreated (to their territory) and fired into the Lebanese army post," said an officer Lebanese army, which is also me; aporkan this incident to UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon.
A year ago, the forces of both countries also clashed on the border, killing two soldiers and a Lebanese journalist and a senior Israeli officer.
