Egypt Fire 505 Police General

Egyptian police fired hundreds of senior officers. The dismissal was the cleanup efforts related to violence against demonstrators in January that led to a dramatic fall of the country's president, Hosni Mubarak.

Interior Ministry spokesman, Mahmoud Alla, as quoted by CNN on Thursday (14/07/2011), say, 505 generals and 82 brigadier police fired on Wednesday with 27 of those accused of killing the demonstrators. More than 840 people died in riots that led to the fall of Mubarak, and is known as the revolution of January 25.

Reform of police and punishment of those who injure protesters are the main demands of the demonstrators who camped in Tahrir Square, Cairo. The square in downtown Cairo became the center of rebellion against authority Hosni Mubarak and his government.

On Monday, Prime Minister Essam Sharaf Egypt called for the trial of former officials accused of killing of demonstrators carried out openly to the public. The call came two days after her speech that asserts the existence of a plan to the dismissal of all officials who were accused of killing demonstrators during the uprising that toppled Mubarak. The development comes amid anger residents to the slow reform since Mubarak fell Feb. 11.

A group called the Coalition January 25, referring to the day of commencement of anti-government protests, said its members will remain in Tahrir Square until their demands are met. Protesters camped in that place for weeks. Many of those who carry televisions, laptops, books, sleeping bags, and clothing. That's to show they plan to stay long term. Traffic around the square had been blocked.

The coalition's demands included economic reform, the resignation of interior minister immediately, the court quickly the former officer in trouble, and the termination of military courts.

Military-led government which took power when Mubarak resigned already tried a number of former officials who allegedly had ordered security forces to fire on the protesters. Mubarak is scheduled to face in the Cairo Criminal Court on Aug. 3 on charges of corruption and reports related to the deaths of the protesters.
